I agree with the charge. More needs to be done as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the environment. Paying per mile in the car is fine with me as long as we have a viable alternative in public transport.
The government is however doing it the wrong way around. It should investigate the sorry state that public transport is in now, and improve it. Then we can have a better infrastructure ready and in place before they switch this project on. Otherwise, do they expect the private sector to react to the sudden increase in demand? Would that really be cost effective for the consumer? Would be as fair, accessible and as frequent as a re-nationalised public transport company? I don't think so! They need to improve on these aspects and hygiene too (the trains I get to London are disgusting - chewing gum on seats, greasy forehead marks on windows, uncleaned headrests, wee surrounded toilets, sometimes no toilets at all, yuck..I can go on..!)
Although I'm not so sure about these black boxes everyone will have. I want my freedom to roam without anyone knowing where I am. Surely there's another way to charge on a per mile basis.
I'm prepared to make a sacrifice though and hope others feel the same.
